Bernadette, I just wanted to drop a belated note of thanks for your wonderful reading with Betti Kahn. Reading your “Waiting for the Light to Change,” I was struck by a number of poems, and I thought I’d mention “To Old Women” in particular, as it made me think of my grandmothers, and my own mother, (and also of my sister, who unfortunately will never grow to be an old woman, having succumbed to cancer 4 years ago at too young an age).

The details for my own “old women” are not the same as in your poem, but the sentiment is the same, echoed in your final line:

“To all of these. Amen. Amen.”

    • Thank you so very much, Brian! What you’ve said here is, I think, what most, if not every, poet strives for–resonance with the reader. And not all poets, as not all teachers, ever know the reach of their words. We’re vessels for transmitting from a bigger place than ourselves. I’ve had a few students over the years and now you among a few readers, remind me of the great honor and joy of teaching and writing.
And you’re right, all of our specific, personal details are our own, but the overarching universality of human experience is what binds us all. Merci. Merci!
